ADULT HEALTH

My Experience

Throughout my career I have worked with adults with health-related conditions including metabolic diseases such as Type 2 Diabetes, weight-related issues, high blood pressure and heart disease, as well as illnesses such as cancer, arthritis, chronic pain and respiratory diseases, namely, asthma and COPD. As an Exercise Physiologist and Health Psychologist I have an in depth knowledge about the physical and psychological implications of these conditions and can work with you to achieve positive changes and improved health.

How do I work?

My therapeutic work involves me working with you as the client to bring about positive health-related behaviour change. By looking at both the physical and psychological elements of your presenting problem I can develop a bespoke therapeutic intervention that will help you to achieve your goals and to be able to continue this beyond our work together.

The therapeutic work will always begin with a 90-minute Assessment and Formulation session. This will enable me to assess your presenting problem and gather any information that will enhance our work together. Much of this information will be ascertained through conversation and a series of health-related questions, but may also involve the completion of scientific questionnaires, and some physical assessments such as height, weight and body composition. However, these are not applicable to every client and are by no means necessary for the therapeutic intervention to be successful. The inclusion of physical tests to enhance your outcomes are discussed with each client on a case by case basis and handled sensitively.

Following the Assessment I work together with you to ensure I have understood all the information you have provided is correct, and also what your goals are for our work together. We will then design a six-week intervention specifically tailored towards achieving these targets. This will include six face-to-face or online 50-minute therapeutic sessions, as well as tasks to complete on a daily basis to embed new health-related behaviours.

The approach of the intervention is likely to include both physical and psychological elements, however the combination of these is specific to each individual clients’ needs and therefore there may be more of a focus on either physical or psychological work.

What can you expect at the end of the six weeks?

By the end of the block of work you should not only have achieved your goals, but also be equipped with the necessary tools to continue to engage with these practices. The therapy will therefore often involve some preparation for reaching this stage, as well as how to deal with setbacks and hiccups which are inevitable and completely normal.
